Mount Olivet Cemetery - Historic Congressional Cemetery in Salt Lake City
The only cemetery in the United States established by an Act of Congress, serving Salt Lake City since 1874. Historic non-denominational cemetery with notable Utah pioneers, governors, and Civil War veterans.
About Mount Olivet Cemetery
Mount Olivet Cemetery holds the unique distinction of being the only cemetery in the United States established by an Act of Congress, signed by President Ulysses S. Grant on May 16, 1874. Originally granted 20 acres from the U.S. Army's Camp Douglas military reservation, this historic non-denominational cemetery has served families of all faiths in Salt Lake City for over 150 years.
Founded through the efforts of Episcopal Bishop Daniel S. Tuttle, Mount Olivet Cemetery was created as Salt Lake City's second public burial ground to serve the diverse, non-Mormon population seeking an inclusive final resting place. Now spanning approximately 80 acres, the cemetery is the final resting place of prominent Utah governors, U.S. Representatives, mining magnates, and Civil War veterans.
