About Salt Lake City Cemetery
Salt Lake City Cemetery stands as Utah's oldest and largest municipal cemetery, established in 1847 with the first burial of Mary Wallace on September 27th. Spanning over 120 acres in The Avenues neighborhood, this historic cemetery has served Salt Lake City families for over 175 years and remains the largest city-operated cemetery in the United States.
Originally surveyed as a 20-acre burial ground in 1849 by George Wallace, Daniel H. Wells, and Joseph Heywood, the cemetery was officially established when Salt Lake City incorporated in 1851. Today, it serves as the final resting place for more than 124,000 souls, including 11 presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, making it one of Utah's most historically significant burial grounds.
